How Kuwaiti are you?

It recently hit me that our open minded youth is losing their kuwaiti identity or roots.. Suddenly open minded means 100% american or close, no sense of belonging to Kuwait except by liking the food and music.. No sense of values..

Religion is a personal thing, and i never wanna talk about that because again its personal.. but i hate the idea of being cleansed from my traditions.. Twisting tradition and updating it sounds good but a total loss is nothing but a true loss.. I dont know if that makes sense but i guess i am a bit frustrated..

The question is: "How Kuwaiti are you?"

are you kuwaiti cuz you eat machboos? in a world that has become a global melting pot i fear that we will lose our selves.

I love listening to western music, reading english books, and i only watch american shows.. but i do love our values of respecting our family and ourselves and living according to our norms..

Living abroad and mixing with foreigners is an amazing learning experience for both parties, but why is it that we end up being totally erased as a result..

Hope that made sense..

Because we are evolving :)

The west is a developed market and with it come developed ideals.

Im afraid to point out that respect for family has nothing to do with where you come from, but moreso your character as an individual and the type of family that you were raised in.

The immediate difference between the family in the middle east and that of the west, is that here fear, and social obligations and fear of shame reduce the chances of anyone doing anything that the family disagrees with.

At the end of the day the west represents human beings more accurately as a whole...

the East is still a fearful society. Scared of standing out, being different, unique, and most of all fear of being shamed...

its true, but it keeps people in check :)

Dont really know if its good or not :)

I agree with a lot of things you said.. a change will do us good.. there are some very silly things that our society monitors and comments on which i think is ridiculous i feel which should be free to do as we please.. but what i noticed was that now there is no sense of culture in most of us.. i look at my friends and i can say that i have two groups, one is the totally 7aram may9eer closed minded which i cant relate to but like out of a sense of long long friendship, and another group that has nothing to do with being kuwaiti and totally out there which again i cant relate to lana they are way ahead of me in that area.. not that its good or bad.. and that has made me feel really lost..

Bumubarak,

With all do respect, I believe the issue is further than the history and pride within the school system. A person’s love for their country should come from the home and from their daily activities. If a person spends 4 hours trying to pay a parking fine and two weeks trying to get a drivers license; they are going to hate Kuwait regardless of the history books. Then you add the hypercritical society; which tends to exploit the mistakes of others; whilst pushing their skeletons into the deeper abyss of their personal closets. No one would think that a family has a homosexual son if they are ridiculing the other families about their children’s personal choices. You want the youth to become more Kuwaiti, give them a reason to become Kuwaiti. The majority of the Arab world thinks we are arrogant spoiled children; and these assumptions are not created from jealousy alone.

I agree that when a Kuwaitis leads their life in a proud way. The youth will look towards them and form themselves in that image. Otherwise we are going to have the widening gap of Kuwaiti/Western extremes; instead of being able to combine the positives from both cultures.

well i wrote an artical in a magazine before about this topic. I dont think being kuwaiti is to eat machboos , watch darb el zalag and wear a deshdasha...

however being kuwait is knowing whereever you are in the world you miss your own country, your family, your own people, you know u will defend it if any one talks about it

i lived for 4 years in scotland. and i always told my scottish friends about kuwait. and i was PROUD when they knew how kuwaities lived and trust me they envied me big time. When they knew that i had a scolarship from our own government they were amazed how education is important to us that the pay you to go abroad.

they also envied our life style. the way they lived was really nothing compared to our living. Espacially when it comes to family, i knew some friends who were kicked out their own house by their family coz they turned 16!!!! in kuwait (ow el7amdilla) our families wount think about kicking us out even when we are 100.

and the main thing is being a muslim country. I dont want kuwait to end like the uk. With people drinking and urinating on the streets. I thank allah that i am born a muslim and a kuwaiti.

however it doesnt mean i HAVE TOO wear a dishdasha and eat machboos , my citizenship says am KUWAITI (without any extras)

All I have to say is that "al-jeel al-yideed" are messed up! I'm talking about the badly dressed, "bad hair day" or cartoon-like hair style, have totally lost the essence of what the culture has to offer!

They haven't lived outside the country from more than 3 months yet they think they are from a different nation!

Even though I'm one of those people who are open-minded and have a "western" mind set I still have my background and values!

Allah i3eena!
